The Economist

''The Economist'' is an English-language weekly newspaper owned by the Economist Group and edited in offices in London.〔(Locations ). Economist Group. Retrieved 12 September 2009.〕〔(Maps ). City of Westminster. Retrieved 28 August 2009.〕 Continuous publication began under founder James Wilson in September 1843. For historical reasons, ''The Economist'' refers to itself as a newspaper, but each print edition appears on small glossy paper like a news magazine. In 2006, its average weekly circulation was reported to be 1.5 million, about half of which were sold in the United States.〔
The publication belongs to The Economist Group. It is 50% owned by private investors and 50% by Exor, the Agnelli holding company, and the Rothschild banking family of England.〔"(Exor to get 40 percent of The Economist after Pearson stake sale )". Reuters, 11 August 2015.〕 Exor and the Rothschilds are represented on the Board of Directors.〔(Governance, The Board, The Economist Newspaper Limited, The Economist Group's parent company, October 12, 2015 )〕 A board of trustees formally appoints the editor, who cannot be removed without its permission. Although ''The Economist'' has a global emphasis and scope, about two-thirds of the 75 staff journalists are based in London. As of March 2014, the Economist Group declared operating profit of £59m. Previous major shareholders include Pearson PLC.
''The Economist'' claims that it "is not a chronicle of economics".〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=How our readers view The Economist )〕 Rather, it aims "to take part in a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress". It takes an editorial stance of classical and economic liberalism which is supportive of free trade, globalisation, free immigration and cultural liberalism (such as supporting legal recognition for same-sex marriage). The publication has described itself as "a product of the Caledonian liberalism of Adam Smith and David Hume".
It targets highly educated readers and claims an audience containing many influential executives and policy-makers. The newspaper's CEO described this recent global change, which was first noticed in the 1990s and accelerated in the beginning of the 21st century, as a "new age of Mass Intelligence".
==Mission statement==
On the contents page of each newsmagazine, ''The Economist''s mission statement is written in italics. It states that ''The Economist'' was "First published in September 1843 to take part in 'a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress'."〔
